“I was at crossroads sometime ago because I had failed to clear my class ten exams and was unsure of what to do next . When I heard of ADD India’s livelihood program in Sidlaghatta it sounded like a good opportunity. The training they provided was very useful and I discovered that I am a fast learner. I feel more confident these days. Earlier I used to be very nervous of taking the bus alone. After joining the women’s group, I take the bus alone every day. I have also picked up many other skills alongside – for instance, I now efficiently use google to find designs for my embroidery work. I would like to continue with this embroidery work. I also want to learn tailoring so I can make something functional out of the pieces we create.”

ADD India’s Livelihood programme:

Women with disabilities are subjected to multiple levels of discrimination, especially in remote rural areas, where the awareness on educational and livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities is diminished. ADD India has worked towards empowering women with disabilities through facilitating regular forums that offer a safe, supportive environment for the sharing of experiences. More recently, in 2017, ADD India facilitated the training of 50 women with disabilities in Sidlagatta taluk of Karnataka, and Keeranur in Pudukottai district of Tamilnadu. To further accelerate their livelihood opportunities, ADD India now aspires to train 40 women with disabilities in both locations, in building an enterprise. We believe that this training will not only improve the lives of women with disabilities, but will also spark a positive ripple effect on everyone in their lives and communities.
